Of course, women throughout the ages sought ways to increase the size of their bosom through dangerous and unsuccessful methods, only to rely on basic flim-flammery as stuffing their brassieres with tissues and gym socks. The silicone breast implant finally allowed a woman to go from a lowly A-cup to a magnificent C-cup overnight, with not a falsie-lined bra to expose them! Cleavage became bountiful as women from all walks of life ran to their local plastic surgeon to get on the waiting list. Of course, certain women whose income was based on the size of their breasts began asking the age old question of plastic surgery... "How big can you make them?"
Implants began to strain at the seams as cc's of silicone were pumped into them, turning grapefruit-sized breasts into watermelons of delight. Strippers were happy to have their velcro-lined tops designed with cups as large as GGG to hold their new breasts. And many women begin having multiple operations to resize their breasts, like they would go to their hairstylists for a dye job...
in 1998, HBO made a serio-comic movie loosely based on the development of the silicone breast implant and the industry that developed from it called, smartly enough, "Breast Men," starring David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends) as the younger (and dweebier) of the two plastic surgeons, who's life radically changes as he becomes the premier surgeon of boob jobs. As you might guess, there are a LOT of bared breasts in this film, with Emily Proctor of CSI Miami fame as a nurse who Schwimmer has a crush on for years comes back into his life as a patient (and yes, you get to see her topless both before AND after surgery) then his wife. I must say, I was very impressed with the make-up involved in this film, because like I said you see women bare their breasts before and after surgery. A lot of fake boobs were made for this movie and were incredibly well made. There's one scene were Ms. Proctor lets a perspective patent poke and squeeze her new boobs to see how they look and feel.
A good section of this movie is done documentary style as women of all sizes talk about how their breast impact their life, but you don't see their faces, only their bared boobs. Big and small. And one pair horribly disfigured, as the dark side of the implant industry rears its ugly head as women began getting sick from their implants and civil class action lawsuits began to spring up... Then the silicone breast implant was history in the United States, with the saline-filled implant taking its place. Many women had their silicone implants replaced with the saline ones, and although the look and feel was never the same, augmented breasts were here to stay. And a few rich ladies went overseas to get the silicone implants, which are still available there.
BTW, the movie is available on DVD... I think I'll pop my copy in the old player to celebrate the big FIVE OH...
